Dear Minister Carroll, A World Class Tram System That Works for Everyone I am writing to ask you to bring an end to segregated public transport in Victoria and make meeting the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport an urgent priority. We need a Melbourne tram network that works for everyone. For 40 years the disability community has been campaigning for access to independent travel, to have the same rights to free movement as everyone else. Until that time comes, people with disabilities cannot fully and reliably engage in work, education, community and life. In some circumstances transport providers offer ‘equivalent access’ through the provision of taxis. But taxis are far too scarce and too expensive to constitute a real alternative. The Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport require all tram stops to be fully compliant by December 2022, a deadline that now simply cannot be met. Instead, the promised stop upgrade works have steadily ground to a halt. The needs of this community are being neglected. This issue doesn’t just impact wheelchair users. It impacts people with mobility impairments, energy management conditions, temporary disabilities, those with situational impairments such as families travelling with prams, and many of our elders. Together these constitute over 3 million people in Victoria. Trams are an iconic part of Melbourne life and a symbol of our world class city. For many they also represent segregation and the sidelining of people with difference. You can help give us the world class transport system that Melbourne deserves, a transport system that works for everyone by making meeting the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport an urgent priority in the 2021 budget.
